Officials & Referee Program

Grand Rapids Area Soccer Club is committed to providing a safe, professional, and development-focused officiating environment for every club match we host. We proudly partner with The Third Team Officials Association and work exclusively with a US Soccer-certified and sanctioned assignor. All GRASC matches are officiated by US Soccer–certified referees, ensuring consistency, accountability, and alignment with the Laws of the Game across all age levels.

Our referee model emphasizes development at every stage—from introducing new officials in our U4–U10 in-house programs to supporting advanced center and assistant referee opportunities in AYSA travel matches. Officials are mentored, supported, and placed in environments that promote growth, confidence, and long-term retention.

2025 Club Soccer Success

The 2025 season demonstrated the strength of this approach across GRASC club competitions:

  • Approximately 245 club matches assigned
  • (~185 in-house + ~60 AYSA travel matches)
  • Zero cancellations due to referee shortages
  • 70 club matches staffed with full three-referee crews
  • 20+ referees actively participating across recreational and travel levels

Why Referee with GRASC?

Refereeing with Grand Rapids Area Soccer Club is more than just calling games—it’s an opportunity to learn, grow, and be part of a supportive soccer community. GRASC is committed to developing referees the same way we develop players: with education, mentorship, and intentional progression.

A Great Place to Start

  • Entry-level friendly: New referees begin with U4–U10 in-house matches in a low-pressure, supportive environment.
  • Consistent assignments: Regular weekly games help build confidence and experience quickly.
  • Mentorship built in: Experienced officials and assignors provide guidance, feedback, and support.

Clear Development Pathway

  • Progress from in-house matches to AYSA travel games as skills and comfort grow.
  • Opportunities to work as assistant referees and centers at higher age groups.
  • Exposure to full three-referee crews, preparing officials for more advanced assignments.

Flexible & Rewarding

  • Flexible scheduling that works well for students and adults.
  • Paid opportunities with competitive per-game rates.
  • Build leadership, decision-making, and communication skills that transfer well beyond soccer.

Supported & Professional

  • All assignments are coordinated through The Third Team Officials Association with a US Soccer-certified assignor.
  • Officials are supported by a club that values respect, preparation, and professionalism.
  • GRASC prioritizes a positive sideline culture and backs referees when issues arise.

Who Can Referee?

  • Middle school, high school, and adult officials are welcome.
  • Soccer experience is helpful but not required—training and support are provided.
  • A great fit for players, former players, parents, educators, and community members.
