Fall Travel Soccer
Fall Travel Soccer is GRASC's non-coed program for players U12 and above (players not on JV/Varsity), focused on player development, teamwork, and quality match play. It competes in the Arrowhead Youth Soccer Association (AYSA) Fall Recreational League — a recreational-level league where all skill levels are welcome and all players generally play at least half of every game.
Ages
Appropriate for players U12 and above (players not on JV/Varsity).
Teams are formed by age group and gender and are not coed.
- 2026 birth-year cutoffs (new this year): AYSA has adopted the US Soccer Aug 1 – Jul 31 birth year.
- U12 — born Aug 1, 2014 – Jul 31, 2016
- U14 — born Aug 1, 2012 – Jul 31, 2014 (for fall 2026 only, all players born in 2012 may register for U14 as a one-year transition)
- Players who make a high school team (including B/C teams) may not return to their fall travel team once they accept their high school spot, even if the high school season ends before the AYSA season does. This aligns with Minnesota State High School League rules.
When
The Fall Travel Soccer season runs early August through the end of September. U12 and U14 teams may continue into early October for playoffs.
Where
Practices are held in Grand Rapids, with games played locally and throughout northern Minnesota and surrounding areas, depending on league and opponent locations.
Practices
Teams typically practice one to two times per week. Practice days and times are determined by individual coaches based on field availability.
Games
- Teams play a combination of league games, regional matches, and tournament games. AYSA assigns play nights by age group:
- U12: Tuesday and Thursday
- U14: Monday and Wednesday
- Some Sunday afternoon games may also be scheduled to help with field and referee availability. For U10–U14, AYSA typically schedules one to two games per week.
Jerseys
Club jerseys are required for travel play.
New players or those needing replacement items may need to purchase a jersey.
Extra Costs
In addition to the registration fee, families should be aware of possible additional costs, including:
- Uniform costs for new players or replacement items
- Optional tournament fees for tournaments beyond those already included (if offered)
Any additional costs will be communicated in advance.
Financial assistance is available through AYSA for families who would otherwise be unable to play. Maximum assistance amounts are $62 (U14), $64 (U12), $45 (U10), and $42 (U6–U8). Contact the club coordinator to request a form.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do teams fill before registration closes?
Yes. Depending on numbers, teams may fill early, so registering early is encouraged.
Are tryouts required?
No. There are no tryouts or cuts. When multiple teams are formed at an age group, the club splits players to encourage parity — for example, splitting age groups evenly across teams rather than separating by birth year. Final team assignments are made by the club.
How much travel should we expect?
Travel is primarily within northern Minnesota and nearby communities, with tournament travel varying by team.
What if my player wants to play up an age group?
In some cases, yes. Players who would benefit from playing in the next older age group can request it — contact the club coordinator right after registering, before teams are formed. Players are not allowed to play down an age group.
2026 Fall Travel Soccer
GRASC Fall Travel Soccer is a non-coed program for players U12 and above that competes in the Arrowhead Youth Soccer Association (AYSA) Fall Recreational League. The league is recreational-level — all skill levels are welcome and all players play at least half of every game — within a structured environment that continues player development through the fall season.
The fall season runs August 1st through the end of September, with playoffs for U12 and U14 possibly extending into early October. Home games are played in Grand Rapids; away matches are primarily in the Duluth and Hibbing areas. Travel distances are manageable and consistent with other northern Minnesota programs.
Teams practice one to two times per week, with schedules set by individual coaches. There are no tryouts or cuts; all registered players are placed on a team at the appropriate age level. When multiple teams form at an age group, the club splits players for parity.
Players wear the Nelson Wood Shims uniform kit. Registration fees include league fees, player insurance, field and referee costs, and team equipment. New players or those needing replacement uniform items may incur additional costs. Note: AYSA increased U12 and U14 team fees by $40 this year to cover assistant referee pay increases; U6–U10 fees are unchanged.
Final team assignments, practice schedules, and game details will be shared once registration closes and league schedules are confirmed.
